The Sheriff of York’s Army

A custom unique to York is the tradition of the Sheriff’s Army. Once a year, usually in April, a group of townspeople are urged to join the Sheriff to patrol the city walls to check that they are safe and in good order. Chris Cullwick, a former Lord Mayor, explained that originally this tradition, known as the Sheriff’s Army, would have checked the walls to inspect the defences and make sure they were sound enough to protect the city against invaders.

The guards who were attending met up and then marched to the York Mansion House were we met up with the rest of the party.

When told we set off procession and head over Lendal Bridge for the city walls. The procession had the Sheriff of York and his party including the Lord Mayor of York, The Guild of Freeman.

We stopped at locations around the wall and a historian talked to the party about the locations. Some interesting information about York, the walls.

At Fishergate Postern I swapped my halberd for the Standard and led the procession for a few more Gates and Bars.

We stopped at the Red Tower, the only brick tower on the wall for some refreshments

We carried on to Bootham Barand the processed back through the city back to the Mansion House.
