Within each SOTA association there are regions, my local ones in G/TW (Tees to the Wash). Within this region there are 5 Summits:
- G/TW-001 Urra Moor – Round Hill
- G/TW-002 Cringle Moor – Drake Howe
- G/TW-003 Gisborough Moor
- G/TW-004 Bishop Wilton Wold
- G/TW-005 Normanby Top
Since January this year I have managed to activate 4 of them and wanted to try and activate the entire region within the year. G5LSI has also activated the same 4 this year and fancied doing the same so we planed to go and activate Gisborough Moor.
Its not a big hill and there is a couple of routes and by combining 2 of them we got a nice circular route.
We had an earlyish start and met G5LSI and his XLY in York to car share the drive up to Commondale. Was a lovely drive through the Howardian Hills and up past Blackey Moor.
We got parked up and rugged up as the wind was blowing a hooley. A quick look at the map and we set off.

After a little we headed in to some trees which was a nice shelter from the wind but it did not last long before we climbed out the trees and higher on to the moor. The path was quite good as it was dry under foot and after while it joined a wide track which made the going a lot easier.
Off the track there was a memorial with a wreath of poppies at its base so I took a small detour to have a closer look. It was a war memorial to soldiers who died in the First World War. I guess they must have been local men.

We continued up the track and I begin to wonder if we would be able to see the sea once we reached the top. G5LSI was not sure we would. We reached the top and you could see the sea! Always like seeing the sea, makes me feel like a small child on trip.

We had to turn away from the see to head to the summit where there was a small shelter. We got to the shelter, and it was a nice break out the wind. We decided to try both radios, G5LSI setup on 20m and I setup on 40m, I also turned on the Anytone and called CQ on 2m and got a reply straight away. Chap was in Middlesbrough so not too far away but a good signal and nice to start the log.

I tried calling on 40 and was getting nothing so we just used G5LSI’s radio and stayed on 20m. We got some good DX and Summit to Summits so it was a good activation.

We packed up and head down the away from the way we had come up the hill. As we got down to the end of the activation zone, G5LSI stayed in the zone and I and his XYL walked out of the zone and I listed to my Anytone. G5LSI calling CQ SOTA, I answered and he replied, that’s hunting credit for the Summit to. He started to walk down out the zone and walked backup into the zone. Once he was out I called CQ SOTA on 2m so he got the hunting credit too. Hurrah!

We carried on the descent and got back down to the road and headed towards the car.
Finally, back at the car, rucksacks off and off to the next park to activate it.
